Central Chiang Mai is defined by its partially restored old city wall, gates and moat. It became the capitol of the Lanna kingdom about 1300. It was overrun by the Burmese about 1550. Many temples stand in and around the old city – much of which now caters to tourists.
Outside the old city one doesn’t have to go far to find older working class neighborhoods, universities, and affluent sections of foreign or expatriate owned condos and coffee shops.
